Sweet Somethings

“You haven’t changed at all… always staring like you wanted to eat something—eat me.”

“I realized it’s one of the many things I’ve wanted to do to you.”
_________

Sterling and Lolade have been in love with each other for as long as they can remember.

They just don’t know it.

So they are best friends.

Everyone else thinks they are best friends too.

Sterling learned sign language when they were children, just so Lolade—deaf, stubborn, and determined to live a normal life—would never feel alone.

The lingering touches did not mean anything.

Sleeping tangled together did not mean anything.

Lolade’s jealousy did not mean anything.

Seeing Sterling naked did not mean anything.

Until one day…

it did.

But love between two boys was never going to be simple. Not in their world.

Separated by fear, shame, and expectations neither of them asked for, Sterling and Lolade are forced to confront feelings they spent years pretending were nothing.

Now they must decide what matters more:

the life they were told to live—

or the love that has always existed between them.

Almost. Always,

“Stop acting like a little girl, you don’t fuck like one, surprisingly.” She harshly said, looking up at him.

What does choosing someone mean when your life was already chosen for you?
Dial Aoua Kanteh has always known who she was supposed to marry.
Essien Asari Cobham has always known who he was never allowed to be.
Bound by a childhood betrothal between a Senegalese family and a powerful Nigerian household, Dial and Essien grew up as friends—until distance, resentment, and quiet cruelty reshaped everything. When Dial was sent back to Senegal to “become a woman,” the promise remained… even as her feelings hardened and Essien learned to survive without her.
Years later, distance fails them.

My Yaa

Etienne had a lot going on. He has always had a lot going on-maybe too much.

He never knew his father, and his mother was too busy sleeping in brothels even to recognize her own son.

His grandmother single-handedly raised him since infancy but she resents him for ‘ruining her daughter’s life’ with his existence.

His Boss was borderline sexually and physically harassing him.

Etienne could barely afford to eat.

His dreams took a pause…or from how long the break is, maybe a total halt, and now, he has to provide for his sick grandmother. He was fully convinced that he could never become the certified chef that he always wanted to be and would probably be stuck drawing dishes in his book all his life.

Yaa’s life appears to be the opposite. She was in the process of obtaining her Master’s degree, and her influencing job is skyrocketing.

Things fall into place for her. Doors open. Luck follows her-or at least, that’s how it looks from the outside.

——

When their lives collide, the imbalance is impossible to ignore.
Will Etienne allow himself to be seen without shrinking?
Will Yaa recognize what he carries beneath the silence?
Or has he been beaten down so thoroughly that rising again is no longer an option?
